Hamam vs. Sauna vs. Steam Room: What's Actually Different
4 min read
Guests often assume a hamam, a sauna and a steam room are variations on the same thing. They're not — each works on the body differently, and knowing the difference makes it much easier to choose.
The hamam: heat plus touch
The hamam is built around the göbektaşı, a heated marble platform, combined with a hands-on scrub and foam wash from an attendant. The heat here is gentle and humid rather than intense, because the real work happens through the kese exfoliation and the wash, not the temperature alone.
It's the most involved of the three — you're not just sitting in a room, someone is working on you — and it takes the longest, usually 45 minutes or more.
The sauna: dry heat, solo and quiet
A sauna is simpler: dry heat, no attendant, no scrub. You sit, you sweat, you leave when you're ready, typically after 15 minutes. It's the fastest of the three and the one most people already know from gyms or hotels — useful on its own, or as a quick warm-up before a massage.
The steam room: humid heat, no contact
A steam room sits between the two in feel: like a sauna, it's a room you sit in alone, but the heat is wet rather than dry, which many guests find easier to breathe in and gentler on the skin. It's included in most of our packages alongside the sauna for exactly this reason — the two complement each other.
- Hamam: hands-on scrub and wash, ~45 minutes, the most complete single experience.
- Sauna: dry heat, solo, ~15 minutes, quick and simple.
- Steam room: humid heat, solo, ~15 minutes, gentler than the sauna for some guests.
Which should you book?
If you only have time for one thing and want the full Turkish experience, the hamam is the obvious choice. If you're short on time or want something to pair with a massage, the sauna or steam room alone does the job — both are already built into our Hammam Program and Classic Massage Packet, so you don't have to choose in advance.
